AP Chemistry Snow Day Assignment

AP Chemistry Holiday Assignment
Below is your AP Chemistry Holiday assignment.  As we discussed earlier, this is a pretty major topic but it is something I feel you can do on your own - with a little guidance.  That guidance is going to come from the podcasts/powerpoints I have linked below.  First, print out the Solutions unit assignments.  Then print out the notes for each of the podcasts/powerpoint.  You will need to have these on hand as well as a pencil and calculator as you watch each podcast/powerpoint.  Our next class will be on Wednesday, Jan. 2nd(B day) or Thursday, Jan.3rd(A day).  On that day you will need to bring the notes you  took while watching each podcast below (remember you can pause and rewind each podcast as needed).  You will also need to turn in the three completed homework sets.  Your textbook will also be an excellent source of additional information and help (There are sample problems and background info in Chapter 12).  If you have difficulty with some of the concepts covered in this holiday assignment, I will make myself available Wednesday and Thursday afternoon (Jan.2nd and 3rd).  It would be a serious mistake to wait until News Year Day to begin this work.  We will use this holiday assignment as a jumping off point for a lab and will bring the unit to a close very quickly after break so, it would also be a good idea to get a head start.

View this Powerpoint 2aniarr3.bmpSolutions1.pptThere are links to podcasts embeded within this powerpoint. Remember that you have to view the show to be able to click on the links.

After viewing the podcasts for solutions1, solutions2, and phase diagrams, you should be able to complete HW1.  Once you have viewed the entire powerpoint and the remaining podcasts, you should be able to complete HW 2.  HW3 are AP like problems and will require some critical thinking as well as some review of previously learned material.  Remember that your book is another resource (Chapter12) as is the Princeton Review book.

Welcome to AP Chemistry!

This will be a stimulating, fast-moving class in which we will delve deeper into the chemistry topics discussed in your first year of chemistry. If you are willing to work hard, you will be able to leave high school with college chemistry credit and will be prepared to advance to the next level of your science education. I am looking forward to working with you!

Dear AP Chemistry Student,

I hope you are all ready for a fun, yet challenging year. You all have a very good background in basic chemistry from your first year Chemistry class, but AP Chem is a little different. Rather than just memorizing how to do particular types of problems, you must instead really understand the chemistry and be able to apply it to all sorts of different situations. Students who finish AP Chemistry come out with a much better understanding of the world around them. They also come out with a sense of great accomplishment. AP Chemistry is a difficult class, but with determination and perseverance, you will surely succeed!
Like almost all AP classes, AP Chem comes with a summer assignment. Previous AP students have designed this assignment—it is what they think is important to review and know before starting class in the fall. Don’t procrastinate! Start out the year on a good note. If you need help with the assignment, you will find it in your Chem I notes, the resources provided on the summer assignment webpage, and in an excellent review book that you will need to buy: Princeton Review’s “Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam.” You can buy it new for about $25, or you can buy it for less on Half.com or Overstock.com.  You will need to have this book by the 2nd week of school.
This page provides excellent resources to help you start out AP Chemistry with a solid background. You may want to not only view the powerpoints but print them out as well.  Just make sure that you print the presentations as handouts (more than one slide on a page) and save some trees.  You are also required to take an on-line quiz before Thursday, August 23rd.  It will count as a quiz grade.! I strongly encourage you to look at the resources provided on this webpage.

Here are some “Words of Wisdom” from previous year’s AP students:
“Learn rxns early in the year, and guide yourself with Cracking the AP Exam early, too.”
“Don’t procrastinate!” “Study!”
“Don’t procrastinate, do not cram the night before a test! It will come back to haunt you!”
“Pay attention! Study at least every other day. Don’t take it too easy, it’s harder than it sounds.”
“Be prepared to study a lot. I really enjoyed the class, but it was very challenging!”
“Start problem sets when you get them!”
“Don’t procrastinate, get Princeton Review book and use it, take good notes..”
“Learn equilibrium and RXNS! Get Princeton Review book and use all year long—don’t wait til the end of the year to open it. Use study groups!”
Looks like the consensus is: study hard, don’t wait until the last minute to do assignments, and buy the Princeton Review book. Hmmmm….good Words of Wisdom to start out the summer assignment! Have a great summer!

SUMMER REFRESHER

What you need to know and REMEMBER before the first day of school:
  • Rules for Sig Figs - identifying and in calculations
  • Conversions - brush up on metric conversions and basic stoichiometry
  • Proper Lab Techniques and basic lab safety
  • Density - what is it, how is it calculated, what can you do with it
  • States of Matter defined in terms of the kinetic molecular theory
  • Development of the current atomic theory - yep, you still need to know all those scientists!  Spring '12  Honors Chem. students did not have to learn the names and discoveries of these scientists but it is something you will need for AP.
  • Atomic Structure including isotopes and ions
  • How to name and write the formulas for: ionic compounds, molecules, acids, and hydrates
  • Polyatomic Ions - I've added a few more to your list (see below)

You will need to complete an on-line quiz before the end of Thursday, August 23rd (midnight Thursday).

***There have been some problems accessing the quiz - hopefully this problem has been fixed.  Thank you for the emails letting me know about this issue.  Please give the quiz another shot.-8/22/12

The quiz will cover the material above and is designed to make sure you are ready for AP Chem. It will be graded so do your best. There is a time limit once you have started the quiz.

You may access the quiz at http://quizstar.4teachers.org/indexs.jsp

(It does require a free registration). You may email me with any difficulties accessing the quiz. Please don't wait until the last moment to start this quiz.

Before beginning the quiz:  turn off your cell phone and tell the other members of your household that you will be busy for the next two hours.  It may prove useful for you to have a periodic table, calculator, pencil, and scratch paper ready before beginning the quiz.

To help make sure you are ready, please use the following resources:

  • Your textbook (Chapters 1 and 2) -we have had an issue with getting the books out in a secure manner, so I will make the books available Monday afternoon, August 20th.  That is my first workday and you can stop by my room to sign out a book.  In the meantime, the textbook has an online resource that is pretty good. Here is the link:  http://wps.prenhall.com/esm_hillpetrucci_genchem_4/ . Select the chapter at the top of the page and click go. The concept review, self quiz, and math review tabs will probably be the most helpful. The e-Media activities are really good for visual representations of fundamental concepts.

  • Your Chemistry I notebook
  • Chemistry Basics 1 powerpoint   1_AP_Basics.ppt
Sig Figs, density, metrics, conversions

Atomic theory, atomic structure, avg atomic mass, naming and writing formulas

Try these problems to make sure you are up to date on some of the more advanced problems in the summer assignment.
